Thea the owl

Research-backed writing instruction, modernized.

Write with Thea is the step-by-step research paper process for primary students, built on 50+ years of proven pedagogy, aligned to Common Core standards, and guided by a wise owl named Thea.

Fundamental techniques. Modern tools.

The best writing instruction hasn’t changed. Dr. Hilda Taba’s inductive teaching strategies and the step-by-step process Thea Holtan built from them in 1973 still work beautifully. What’s changed is how we deliver them. Write with Thea takes that proven methodology and puts it in the hands of every student with guided digital tools, personalized feedback, and a patient AI coach who teaches but never writes for them.

50+ years

of classroom-tested methodology

Step by step

from choosing a topic to a published report

Four stages. Step by step. One patient guide.

Each stage maps to Taba’s concept development strategy. Students move from concrete facts to abstract generalizations, just as the research prescribes.

Step-by-step guidance

Every step includes an explanation, an example from Thea, and a practice task, so students always know what to do next.

Digital note cards

Students capture research on organized note cards, building the habit of sourcing and summarizing information.

Sort notes into topic groups with an intuitive drag-and-drop interface that makes outlining feel natural.

Structured outlining

Turn sorted notes into a real outline. Students see the structure of their report before they write a word.

Thea reads student writing and gives specific, actionable coaching, like having a patient tutor for every student.

Progress tracking

Teachers see every student's progress at a glance: who's researching, who's drafting, and who just published.

A sprinkle of AI magic. You hold the wand.

Thea uses AI to give every student personalized coaching, but she never writes for them. She reads their work, asks guiding questions, and helps them find their own words.

Personalized feedback on every step

Thea reads student writing and gives specific, encouraging coaching, not generic suggestions.

Teacher-controlled AI

Toggle “Ask Thea” on or off for any class. Students always get the structured process. AI coaching is an extra layer you control.

Teaches, never writes

Thea is designed to build writers, not replace them. She guides students through the thinking process so the words are always theirs.

Thea’s Feedback

“Hmm, your introduction jumps right into the details. What if we gave your reader a moment to settle in first? A good opening sentence is like holding the door open.”

Aligned to Common Core Writing Standards.

Write with Thea doesn’t just teach writing. It addresses the specific standards your district expects. Every phase maps directly to the Common Core ELA Writing Standards for primary grades.

Thea the owl wondering

In 1973, a teacher named Thea had an idea.

Thea Holtan was a high-school English teacher turned elementary media director in Bloomington, Minnesota. She noticed her students couldn’t write research papers. Not because they weren’t smart, but because nobody had shown them how. Drawing on Dr. Hilda Taba’s inductive teaching strategies, she created a step-by-step process from classroom experience. Over 50 years and thousands of classrooms, that process was refined into what works today.

Today, her process lives on, guided by Thea the owl, powered by modern technology, and still doing what it always did: teaching kids to think, organize, and write.
